Guidelines for Authors

Information for Authors

The IEEE INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT) JOURNAL publishes articles on the latest advances, as well as review articles, on the various aspects of IoT. Topics include IoT system architecture, IoT enabling technologies, IoT communication and networking protocols such as network coding, and IoT services and applications. Examples are IoT demands, impacts, and implications on sensors technologies, big data management, and future internet design for various IoT use cases, such as smart cities, smart environments, smart homes, etc. The fields of interest include: IoT architecture such as things-centric,
datacentric, service-oriented IoT architecture; IoT enabling technologies and systematic integration such as sensor technologies, big sensor data management, and future Internet design for IoT; IoT services, applications, and test-beds such as IoT service middleware, IoT application programming interface (API), IoT application design, and IoT trials/experiments; IoT standardization activities and technology development in different standard development organizations (SDO) such as IEEE, IETF, ITU, 3GPP, ETSI, etc.

Manuscript Submission

Authors are invited to submit manuscripts containing original and substantial work that must not be currently under consideration for publication in other venues. It is IEEE Publications policy to not republish papers of any kind (see https://www.ieee.org/publications/rights/multi-sub-guidelinesintro.html). However, the IEEE IoT Journal might consider publishing expanded, more complete, and archival-quality versions of prior papers that have been presented at conferences and/or published in conference proceedings. Please refer to guidelines for conference based special issues. English language editing services can help refine the language of your article and reduce the risk of rejection without review. IEEE authors are eligible for discounts at several language editing services; visit the IEEE Author Center, https://ieeeauthorcenter.ieee.org/, to learn more. Please note these services are fee-based and do not guarantee acceptance.

All original manuscripts or revisions to the IEEE IoT Journal must be submitted electronically through ScholarOne Manuscripts, http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/iot. Each submitted manuscript will be sent to reviewers who will evaluate your work. The IEEE IoT Journal encourages authors to suggest potential reviewers as part of the submission process, which might help to expedite the review of the manuscript. Please suggest only those without conflict of interest (e.g., who work at institutions other than your own and with whom you have no collaborative or other technical or family ties). Each submission must be classified by the author to select appropriate keywords of this Journal (e.g. Constrained Devices, Body Area Networks, Cyber–Physical Systems).

ORCID Required: All IEEE journals require an Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) for all authors. To create an ORCID, please visit: https://orcid.org/register. The author will need a registered ORCID in order to submit a manuscript or review a proof in this journal. The articles in this journal are peer reviewed in accordance with the requirements set forth in the IEEE PSPB Operations Manual (sections 8.2.1.C & 8.2.2.A). Each published article was reviewed by a minimum of two independent reviewers using a single-anonymous review process, where the identities of the reviewers are not known to the authors, but the reviewers know the identities of the authors. Articles will be screened for plagiarism before acceptance.

Manuscript Formats

Authors are required to prepare manuscripts employing the double-column style template developed by IEEE. More general information on article templates, as well as instructions on how to prepare your papers for publication in IEEE Transactions and Journals can be found in the IEEE Author Center (see https://ieeeauthorcenter.ieee.org/). The abstract must be between 150 and 250 words. Be sure that you adhere to these limits, otherwise you will need to edit your abstract accordingly. The abstract must be written as one paragraph, and should not contain reference citations, or displayed
mathematical equations.

Author Names in Native Languages: IEEE supports the publication of author names in the native language alongside the English versions of the names in the author list of an article. For more information, please visit the IEEE Author Center at https://journals.ieeeauthorcenter.ieee.org/create-yourieee-journal-article/create-the-text-of-your-article/publishing-author-names-in-native-languages/.

IEEE IoT Journal follows the IEEE practices on units and abbreviations, as outlined in the Institute’s published standards; see IEEE Author Center at: https://ieeeauthorcenter.ieee.org/. IEEE IoT Journal requires that derivations which are easily found in the literature merely be cited. Follow the Guidelines for Author-Supplied Electronic Text and Graphics available for download at the above referenced web site.

This journal accepts graphical abstracts and they must be peer reviewed. For more information about graphical abstracts and their specifications, please visit the IEEE Author Center at https://ieeeauthorcenter.ieee.org/.

Multiple Submissions and Prior Publications

The IEEE IoT Journal cannot tolerate unfortunate situations when authors submit the same, or nearly identical, manuscript to more than one place (journals or conferences) or resubmit their prior publications without significant extension. In such cases: a) the manuscript in question will be immediately rejected; b) other manuscripts of the same authors/co-authors currently under review will be returned; c) the authors/co-authors will be prohibited from new submissions to the IEEE IoT Journal for at least one calendar year.

Mandatory Page Charges

The author(s) or their company/institution will be billed $175 per page in excess of the first eight published pages. These charges are mandatory, and the author(s) will be held responsible for them. Payment of these charges is not negotiable or voluntary. Submission by the author of their manuscript to this Journal signifies acceptance of the requirement to pay mandatory page charges. The Publisher holds the right to withhold publication of the current submission or any future submissions from the author(s) if this charge is not honored. To avoid incurring mandatory page charges, the author(s) are
advised to practice economy in the original manuscript submission and restraint in preparation of the final manuscript following peer review.

Copyright

It is the policy of the IEEE to own the copyright to the technical contributions it publishes. To comply with the IEEE copyright policy, authors are required to sign an IEEE Copyright Form before publication. The IEEE must assume that material submitted to its publications is available for general dissemination. It is the responsibility of the author, not the IEEE, to determine whether disclosure of the material requires prior consent of other parties and, if so, to obtain it.

Open Access

This publication is a hybrid journal, allowing either Traditional manuscript submission or Open Access (author-pays OA) manuscript submission. Upon submission, if you choose to have your manuscript be an Open Access article, you commit to pay the $2495 OA fee if your manuscript is accepted for publication in order to enable unrestricted public access. Any other application charges (such as over-length page charge and/or charge for the use of color in the print format) will be billed separately. If you would like your manuscript to be a Traditional submission, your article will be available to qualified subscribers and purchasers via IEEE Xplore. No OA payment is required for Traditional submission. Corresponding authors from low-income countries are eligible for waived or reduced open access APCs.
